thanks for the feedback. maybe i wasn't clear enough, i didn't add the folders via ftp, i used the nextgen gallery function to add the new gallery.
but i don't get any confirmation that the gallery was added. So when i checked via FTP i could see that nextgen DID actually create the new folder and subfolder fot thumbnails.
The problem is that the new gallery is not shown in the dropdown so i could select it and upload images to it.
I didn't add any folder manually it was all done via nextgen admin...
Also i tried the usual stuff: clear cache, deactivate all plugins, change to default theme. nothing helps.
I didn't change anything to my general blog setup other than updating a pretty old WP version to 3.5. All plugins, themes and settings remained the same. NExtGen worked without problems prior to the update.
Could this be a DB rights issue? NextGen does create the folders, but apparently doesn't have the entries in the DB afterwards...
