Agreed. Basically sireneweb said to use ZIP instead or look into php.ini.

Well I did try ZIP and I get the same erratic behavior: sometime it works first time, sometimes after 2 or 3 trials. But at least with ZIP I don't seem to be getting a partial archive as I was getting with tar.gz.

Thanks again for this plugin though. Have you set up a donation area?
